Wines that uncover the essence of El Penedès
A sustainable recovery project
We value our land and our winegrowers
The property
Can Lleó is a property owned by the Lleó family located in Sant Martí Sarroca and lends its name to one of the neighbourhoods of the village. The property has a masía; a typical country home, with a winery from the 17th century and a small church built by the family in 1750 (Ermita de la Mare de Déu del Roser).
The property has 144 hectares of vineyards, the majority of which are local white grape varieties. The main white grape varieties are xarelo, macabeo, parellada, moscatell, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay. Among the red grape varieties are garnacha, tempranillo, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon.

History
The main house is of medieval origin, the winery dates from the beginning of the 18th century and the first document detailing the production of wine is an inventory from 1751. The wine used to be fermented in tanks lined with ceramic, cement, or in barrels of 10 loads (1200 liters) and was sold in bulk.
The winery was in operation until 1986. In 2022 the family reformed the winery and resumed production under the Can Lleó de Vilanoveta brand, the original name of the property.
Winery and wines
The winery was renovated in 2022 preserving the original elements whilst modernizing the machinery. During the 2022 harvest, 6 wines have been produced from the property’s most emblematic vineyards.
The wines are made and bottled on-site from our own vineyards. Our wines are organic, and grapes are picked by hand. The varieties currently being fermented in the winery are macabeo, parellada and garnacha tinta. The wines are born from the desire to recover the essence of the territory and an elaboration with the traditional methods that were used in the old Can Lleó winery.

The vineyards
The first wines come from emblematic vineyards due to their age or location. They are old, organic vines planted in goblet on calcareous soil between 200 and 350 meters above sea level.
